A STICKER CAMPAIGN THAT BECAME A MOVEMENT
Some resistance starts with a manifesto. Addiopizzo started with a sticker.
In 2004, a group of friends in Palermo who wanted to open a pub realized they’d eventually face a demand for pizzo — and decided, before it happened, to say no. They printed stickers reading “An entire people who pays the pizzo is a people without dignity” and papered the city overnight.
What stays with me about Addiopizzo is how ordinary its founders were. Not activists, not connected to any institution — just young people who decided the sticker was cheaper than saying yes.
WHERE ADDIOPIZZO COMES FROM
Addiopizzo was founded in 2004 in Palermo, explicitly as a volunteer association with one focus: extortion, nothing else. That narrowness was deliberate — no party or business interest could co-opt the message.
The stickers came first. Organizing merchants to report extortion collectively came next.
WHAT SETS ADDIOPIZZO APART
What distinguishes Addiopizzo is its focus on the customer, not just the shopkeeper. Since 2005, its “consumo critico” campaign has promoted the businesses that refuse to pay — turning an everyday purchase into a small act of resistance.
No protest, no headline. Just a shopper choosing one bakery over another.
FACING THE PRESSURE
The pressure hasn’t disappeared, it’s shifted. This year (2026), several Palermo neighborhoods saw a fresh wave of threats and incendiary attacks against merchants, prompting Addiopizzo to relaunch its campaign there. Of the many targeted, only a handful have formally reported it — fear doesn’t expire.
But collective reporting has worked before. Nearly twenty years ago, in Palermo’s San Lorenzo district, dozens of merchants reported extortion together with Addiopizzo’s support — one of Italy’s most significant collective anti-racket actions.
WHERE THINGS STAND
Addiopizzo doesn’t claim pizzo is gone from Palermo. It says fewer people are paying without a fight, and every merchant who reports makes the next report easier.
A modest claim. Also true, which is rarer.
WHY THIS ORGANIZATION IS HERE
Addiopizzo is one of the more recognized antimafia names, deservedly — but the reason is its method: resistance built from a sticker and a decision to shop elsewhere, sustained for twenty years by people with no formal power.
Exactly the kind of small win Omertà Overcomers exists to document.
